Extended Matariki rail upgrades

The next full rail closure will take place over an extended Matariki weekend, from Friday 20 June 2025 to Monday 23 June 2025 when train usage is low.

During this closure as well as the upgrades, renewals, and overdue maintenance KiwiRail is carrying out on the network, works are underway to deliver multiple large-scale infrastructure projects to prepare for CRL.

These projects include:

  • network wide – installing new fibre cables
  • Henderson Station – continuing the installation of a new lift and escalator
  • Waitemata (Britomart) Station – upgrade acoustic panels and maintenance on sky lights
  • Newmarket Station – continue weathertightness renewal works
  • Takanini Station – level crossing removal investigation
  • ongoing Rail Network Rebuild work across the network.

Getting around while lines are closed

During the Matariki rail upgrade, rail replacement buses will be available.

Details on the rail replacement bus schedules can be viewed on the Alternative transport during the Rail Network Rebuild page.
